The Expanse (TV series)

The Expanse is a sci-fi TV series from SyFy channel.  It is about human occupation or colonisation of outer space and Mars.  The series is very well made and covers the following about space and space travel.

  1. Water and air is more important than gold
  2. There are no ‘force shields’ or ‘inertia dampeners’ or ‘light speed’

It is that kind of Sci-Fi depiction where you can win a space fight and lose in the deadly debris shower.  There are some really revolutionary ways of using technology.  No more massive flight decks!  If you can put everything in the size of an iPad mini, you don’t need massive consoles.  The concept of hand terminals as cell phones is interesting.    link

Data exchange with other terminals is just a way of hand.  No peering required or it was cut for dramatisation.  It reminds me of the good old days of Palm organisers beaming contacts.

What about the plot?  Watch it yourself, it is interesting. link

Assault or anger waiting to explode.

A 69-year-old man was assaulted by a 62-year old man.  This happened when the older man brushed against the younger man.  The victim was punched in the eye and later suffered a heart attack.  Despite efforts by a bystander, the assailant escaped on an e-bike.  The assailant was later arrested by the police.

I have noticed that this year have lots of instances, where a simple apology and moving on, escalated into violence.  There seems to be underlying feeling tension, anger where at the slightest provocation, burst out to the front.

Remember this:

Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love… Our aim must never be to defeat or humiliate the white man, but to win his friendship and understanding. Link

Singapore’s Prayer to the Bell curve

The Bell curve or Normal distribution is used among other things, academic grading.  A few Redditors gathered together and wrote a prayer.

Our Father, Who art in heaven
Hallowed be Thy name;
Thy midyears come
Thy will be done in
by O’s as it is in A’s
Give us this day our daily A,
and forgive us our subpasses,
as we forgive those who give poor peer grading marks to us;
and lead us not into them F9s,
but deliver us our A1s, GPA 4.0.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

OnePlus 3T is running out.

The 5-month-old OnePlus3T is running out.  OnePlus is scheduled to announce a new device in June.  They have announced that stock for 3T is running low.  The device with a SnapDragon 835 SOC with 6GB RAM and 64GB flash memory has been very well received.  Compared with the predecessors, One and 2, the 3T comes with NFC and no weird tinting of the display.  All the geeks are in heaven, me included.

There have been minimum reports of hardware lemons, seems that OnePlus have their manufacturing processes down to a T.  All that remains is to iron out the kinks in the OxygenOS 4.1.3.  There are some people still complaining about high battery consumption.

Waze, making sense of the traffic maze

I saw on MBKHD G+ post about using Waze to beat traffic stops and congestions.  So I thought hmm, why not give a try.

Waze is a community-based driving navigation app.  It was bought over by Google in 2013.  Google Maps takes the traffic congestion info from the app as input.  I have used it before a year or two ago,  but I found the UI lacking and uninstalled.  This time round, the UI looks better.  I can add Favourites and timed drives!  Timed or scheduled drives are for upcoming journeys.  It will alert you when to leave, much like Google Now.  It also can send via SMS or Whatsapp an ETA.  This requires manual activation.

So far it works and tries to guide me the fastest route.  The problem is that some routes flagged as slow and I found to be clear.  For example, I was trying to go to Hougang mall, Waze thinks that the road in front, Hougang Ave 10 is congested.  It kept insisting on going by the major road  Upper Serangoon road.  Except that I am at Hougang Ave 4, just a few lights away.

Another strange thing Waze does not work with Bluetooth ear piece seamlessly.

In summary, it works, but sometimes the congestion avoidance can be better.

Fountain Pens and studying

I recently got into using Fountain Pens. This continued even after a lost bunch of them at work. On another front, I have been dragging my feet on studying for my Project Management Professional certification. It was really a bore to watch videos and take notes, rinse and repeat for the 40+ modules.

I filled out the study notebook and needed a replacement.  Penelope Trunk once wrote

If you don’t like writing lists, buy a new pen.

Taking that message to heart,  I got a replacement notebook that is fountain pen friendly.  Nothing expensive, just some books and loose sheets from Daiso.

Guess what happened? Writing out notes isn’t a bore anymore! Using my EDC fountain pen, Loom F, it is a joy to watch as the nib sailed across the page. Letters are formed by the twirling silver nib. I managed to get down to creating lists for the inputs and outputs of each process, all in record speed!

As a keyboard warrior, using the fountain pen, I found that I get lesser finger and arm strain.

OxygenOS 4.1.3

I have used OxygenOS 4.1.3 for about 2 weeks and it has won me over.  It is a battery sipper.  I left it uncharged and overnight it just consumed 2 % (100 to 98%).  There is some niggling Mobile Radio consumption but it did not put a dent on the battery performance.  This can be a problem.

The phone sleeps so hard, alarms sometimes don’t ring.  This is even after taking them out from Battery Optimization.  At times, the stock clock app does trigger the alarm, but third party apps like AlarmDroid does not. What I have found, by locking the AlarmDroid app in RAM solves the problem.

Another annoying feature of OxygenOS is in QuickSettings, the status bar icons cannot be click or tap through like in Cyanogen or CyanogenMod.

In another news, the new iteration OnePlus 5 is rumoured to be announced any day now.

Android 7

Android 7 or Nougat update for the OnePlus 3t arrived about 2 weeks ago.  I was apprehensive about installing it after reading reports of bad battery performance and weird delete problems.  Keeping a sharp eye on the online forums, while I check out every nuance of the Marshmallow Oxygen OS.

With no one screaming for help, I figure it is safe to install.

After the upgrade, clear the cache in Storage and clear data for Google Play Service.  It ran for a whole day of Fri 12 May with no problems.  I accidentally left it unplugged and amazingly still with 40% battery.
