After close to 2 months of waiting, I finally received my OnePluse shareable invites. I think the delay was caused by my profile. I did not put in a location when I signed up because I did not foresee a long commitment to the forums. After setting the right location, 3 days later the invites pop up.
The simple act of giving away the invites was much more difficult than I thought. First, immediate family. nobody interested. Colleagues same. Forums full of newcomers or possibly scalpers. Some are genuinely really blur. I can’t give to those that not technically inclined. Lets face it the hardware and software are still rough around the edges.
In the end , I gave one to a tech guru on Twitter , one o Reddit and the last one on OnePlus forums.
I have used the OnePlus One for slightly over a week. Here are my impressions.
It is Big
It is slightly longer than a pen, but it sticks out everywhere. See picture below. Depending on my shirt pocket, it sticks out about 1 or 2 cm out of my shirt pocket. When I am self conscious about it, I put it my pants. Then it pokes against my hip. In my jeans where the pockets are shallower, no I am not happy to see you, it is just my OPO. The width of the phone is such that the Google Now button has been remapped from the Menu to the Home button. The menu button is too far to reach without some finger gymnastics.
The case shown here is from Sim Lim Square. Its long edge protection is poor. I have since replaced it with a Diztronic (excellent!) purchased from HardWareZone.
Battery life is great
It can easily last a full 24 hours with 3 hrs of Screen On Time. Not that I am holding back my usage of anything.
Wireless is weird
I ported my Llama profiles from my Galaxy S2 9100. This has been working fine for months. WiFi control does not work reliably on the OnePlus One. Often than not the WiFi locks up. The button changes from a blue to white with a red outline. The only way to clear this is wait overnight or restart. After I rooted, the WiFi switch on-off-on is much better. A case for root? The home AP, I have changed the country and zone to avoid interference from my neighbours and it caused the OnePlus One to hang! Really strange. Changed the country and code back. Now Llama is controlling it smoothly.
This annual event from SAFRA is the highlight from on the running calendar. This is due to the organization and sometimes excellent route.
When I reached the start point, they have just flagged off. No big deal as the pack is 1 km long. To my horror I realized that my phone was not with me. The water bottle and energy gel distracted me. I must have left it in the Golden Shoe car park toilets. Did a fast 500m sprint back to the toilets to find it empty. Luckily it was still in the boot of the car. Another sprint back to the Esplanade bridge and to find the starting point is now on the near center of the bridge. In the past it was close to the Fullerton Hotel. So long story short, I have to run the bridge near twice just to start.
By the time I hit 3km mark, I was already out of pace. It took up to 6km to sort things out. Unfortunately I was unable to clear the pack before the slow stretch at Costa Rhu condos at 8+ min/km. The route around the Sports Hub was really stupid. We were doing zig zags to get to the Nichol Highway.
The U turn at Crawford Street was a short one, but it merges the 10km runners. They were still going really fast with some near collisions. This year and probably for the first time, the route did not take into the F1 pits and Floating platform.
Overall a late start gave bad results and I need to do more 10km training runs.
