IKEA furniture

The living room coffee table is getting really worn out.  After 9.5 years of faithful service, it is literally coming apart.  The glue that used to hold the solid wood planks together as dissipated and now the whole assembly is loose.  We believed in a wooden coffee table as the glass top is high maintenance with safety issues.

The last slice of the bottom came off and we decided it is time for a replacement.   The new guy is similarly from IKEA,  a LACK coffee table.  With exception of the the bottom tray, all parts are made of chipboard.  After using a solid wood table, I wonder how long the new guy is going to last.

Singapore Air Pollution at an all time high

The  Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) hit 401 on 21 Jun 13.  A record of sorts.  Everything outside was shrouded in the haze, courtesy of the regular slash and burn forest clearing in Sumatra, Indonesia

So what did you do when the haze hit Singapore?  The PSI started climbing up from 14 Jun to a massive 401 on 21 Jun. Well for my family and me, we kept mainly indoors.  To prevent the foul air from coming in the windows were kept tightly closed.  The build up heat quickly became unbearable and we turned on the air con nearly every night and nearly the whole day on Sat 22 Jun.  This is notable as we have always relied on fans for air circulation and cooling through the year.   We only run the air con once or twice a year.

The haze go so bad that the swimming pool was closed and all activities, indoor outdoor activities at the community centre were cancelled.

Air purifiers were hot items, they were sold out at all stores.  Demand for N95 masks shot through the roof.  I don’t know why anyone bother as most do not put the masks properly.  The Health Ministry released 4 million masks through People’s Association to calm things down. link

Die Hard: A Good Day to Die Hard

This is the fifth outing of the action movie franchise, Die Hard.  Like all action movies, some suspension of belief is required.  Just like  The A-Team (2010), this movie rewrites the laws of physics. The first 5 minutes was very beautifully done.  An assassination is completed with the help of several cutouts.

The second after the explosion at the court house, everything started going downhill.  A 2 tonne jeep cannot push a 18 tonne Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) any where.  You never bring asset/s into the nerve center of your safe house.   The rigged corridor though is a very nice touch.

At certain points in the movie, John Mclane still show he has the New York cop sense of trouble, to stop this from turning into a very expensive B grade movie.

The last reel on literally throws everything out of the window.  Radioactivity,  momentum, the necessary explosions and more radioactivity.

A forgettable movie, unlike Die Hard 3 and 4.

Why don’t anyone do movies like Safe House (Ryan Reynolds), Jack Reacher or Transit anymore?

MMS messages where art thou?

Android 4.2.2

I have this problem for the longest time.  I simply could not receive or send MMS messages on Cyanogenmod 10.  Every time I receive a message, I have wait at least a day for the telco delivery to timeout and send me a SMS with a link to download.  Now if the MMS contains time critical info .. .. …

After another instance of non delivery, I called up M1 and they very kindly emailed me the settings.  I followed the steps and created the APN and rebooted the phone.  Tried sending to myself and others with no success.  I gave up and decided that it is the CM10 at fault.  There were some posts on XDA that patching is required but new nightlies do not.  Hmmmm

So I decided to leap forward again back to the bleeding edge of technology, Android 4.2.2 on Galaxy S2 International.

The upgrade was painless  and I remembered to flash Google Apps this time.  There were a few irritating details.  A strange yellow question mark at the cLock widget.  The next alarm event was partially blocked by the security PIN dialog box.  I spend a few minutes poking around and found that the strange yellow question mark was due to absence of Yahoo Weather app.  Nope don’t need it. Disabled the weather feed and the next alarm event.  Now the lock screen is nice clean and well laid out.

There is a process that kept crashing every time I reboot.  A dialog box will pop up saying:

process  com.google.process.gapps has stopped

A quick search revealed that you can perform a quick reset to solve this.  Settings > Manage Apps > Reset app preference.  Very nice feature.  link

Google Now kept reporting that the Location Services were not turned.  After some head scratching and reading some posts about upgrading Google Play, I deduced that I have installed the wrong version of Google Apps.  A quick check revealed that I was right. link

The actual fix for the crashing process and Google Location service is to flash the right version of Google Apps.

MMS?  Still not working.  I guess I have resort to WhatsApp.

9 Jun Update

Evernote latest update could not be downloaded. I keep getting this error

Update for “Evernote” could not be downloaded due to an error. (Error retrieving information from server. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0])

I tried clearing data for Google Play and Google Framework.  A post on Android Central, pointed out it is cleaner to delete and add back your Google account.  Thereafter the update works!  Note you will need re-authenticate that Google account for all your apps and location access. link link

18 Jul Update

A possible cause of the RPC server error is that you have multiple Google Accounts and Play may be configured to use the secondary account.  Check Play> Settings> Accounts and select accordingly.
