New Nexus Devices 4, 10

Google just announced new Nexus devices.  There was supposed to be a launch but that was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy.

Nexus 4 is a phone made by LG,  10 is a 10 inch tablet by Samsung.  Both will most likely ship with Android 4.2.  The new version of Android comes with a gesture keyboard that is like Swype and a new camera app.  There is another Nexus device, Nexus 7 made by ASUS, now available in 32GB.

Look carefully at the 4 in the video, does it remind you of another phone?  The guy that was presenting the devices is no other than Matias Duarte.  Yes, he was from Palm Computing.

Now to see when is Google going to release the code for Android 4.2 to Android Open Source Project (AOSP).  Once that is done, all modders out there can start experiencing the latest Jelly Bean goodness.

BYOD

What is that?  Its Bring Your Own Device. That is the latest trend in end user computing.  Instead of the company purchasing the computer for you, you use the allocated amount to buy the device or you supply it. It is suppose to be very popular in the US.

Traditionally, IT/ IS/ MIS sets the configuration of the end user computer or notebook.  This may be purchased by the IT, end user department or even the end user.  In the end this shiny new box will be configured by IT, for the require suite of software and security products, eg AV, VPN and two factor authentication etc.

Enter BYOD or Bring Your Own Device.  This practice has been around for some time in Singapore, but largely confined to the insurance and property sector.  There the agents are actually individual businesses.  The IT would recommend which models to buy for optimum application performance.  Other than that, the rest is end user responsibilities.

That was the picture in 2010.   With the introduction of iPad and Android tablets, things turned upside down.  Gartner calls it the most radical shift in enterprise end user computing since the PC. Users bring their personal devices to work and expect connectivity to the enterprise repository.  How to support these devices to access Sharepoint? (Tip: Use an app called SharePlus).  There is also a small growing trend of users using their own personal notebooks eg MacBook Air.

What about security?  There are lots of vendors out there are willing to sell you box/es to solve your problem.  Note there is no one magic solution to this.  You have to tailor these solutions to your environment.

You can

  1. have the devices co-exist on the WLAN with aggressive monitoring
  2. move all the personal devices to the quarantine zone and use VPN.
  3. the list goes on.

Other than information security, who is going to responsible when these devices break down? or OS crashes?  These you can handle via management approved policies.

Top BYOD concerns

Vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer

Microsoft

Hmm another Microsoft Security Advisory.  This time, strangely it affects Internet Explorer  6 to 9. That is nearly all versions.  The vulnerability seems to be quite unique.  It could allow the hacker to perform remote code execution on websites.

The mitigation is more than the usual turn off the ActiveX until the patch is out. It require users involve installing a “Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolket” or EMET.

This complexity led to some tech websites encouraging users to change browsers. link  This is easier said than done.  Corporate users need Internet Explorer to access Sharepoint, SSRS, CRM etc.  Telling them to use another browser for Internet related work is an exercise in futility.

On another note, KB articles are now 8 digits!

Jelly Bean on Samsung S2

Jelly Bean took a long time to come to Cyanogenmod (CM).  It was plagued with memory leaks for sometime. This is because of the Samsung proprietary drivers needed for the CPU. In an interview, one of the key developers, Codeworkx made a few negative comments about it.

The memory leak was finally  fixed in late Sept 12 and it took sometime for the fix to be rolled up in the CM10 nightly release schedule.  Just as I was going to install, I came across a few reviews that the 2 Oct nightly was very slow.  So things got put on hold.  In the late afternoon, the 3 Oct nightly was released and the reviews were positive.  So I started upgrading from CM 9 (ICS) to CM10 (JB) on my Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100.

1. Perform a backup or screenshot everything.

For reasons unknown, my internal SD card does not mount properly for ROM Manager.  So Nandroid backup is not possible.

2. Copy ROM and Gapps over.

3. Boot to Recovery and flash in the same order.

4. Clear cache (I did not do this)

5. Reboot and wait for OS to upgrade the apps.

6. All the apps from CM9 and data should still be there.

7. Re-create Camera short cut.

8. Start Google Play to let it auto update some of the Google apps.

System Information and version.
New Notification Drawer. You can view a brief summary of incoming mails and messages. There are widgets too!

A better screen shot of the Notification Drawer. Note the thumbnail picture.
Thew new updater replacing ROM Manager. Not working at the moment.

CM10 is now only available via nightly releases.  It is not on weekly, stable or release candidate.  The download type need to be set to all to see the nightly releases.

Tested Google Now. Interesting information it gives you, departure schedule for buses and trains near your location.  I have fed it some GPS data by driving around and sample searches.  So far it is showing only the weather. A future blog post coming.

Google Now. The cards will change to cater to your needs.

Battery life, initial gut feel is a bit shorter.  The CPU work harder, more juice required.

Gapps

Lastly, most importantly,

YMMV

Things I learn from watching Japanese drama

Things I learn from watching Japanese drama, more specifically, detective drama, Strawberry Night.

  1. Investigation strategy is decided by mid level commanders
  2. No notebooks! Notes are written on a sheet of paper, presumably for easy filing later.
  3. Compared to American shows, there is no need to visit a strip bar.
  4. Politics are vicious.
  5. Trace contamination by investigators seem to be irrelevant.
  6. What is with the briefcase?  They carry them every where including apprehending suspects.
